What a Gas Mask is
A gas mask is a device that was made and created by an American named Garrett Morgan, in 1914. The gas mask is designed to simply protect someone from poisonous, toxic, and quite deadly gases. How it works is that it simply covers and seals itself around someones face. Covering the mouth, nose, and sometimes the eyes. Depending on the type of gas mask you have, it would provide fresh and pure oxygen through a tube that is connected from the mask to a respirator which holds and contains the purified oxygen.

The Evolution of the Gas Mask
They evolved by simply at first them just being rags, or sponges some had used, that were soaked in anti-chemical gas for the soldiers had to hold over their mouth and nose. Then they moved onto a safety hood and smoke protector. Then over to an actual gas mask of some sort like we have now but less “detailed” so to say and made out of cheaper materials as well as being more simple designed. Meaning, the ones they had back then were just either a tube connected to the gas mask on one end and the other connected to a container which contained and held the purified oxygen. The eye protection aspect of the mask was very weak and could easily be broken or cracked which can have the gases seep through and into the mask without the person who is currently wearing the mask is aware of it As to now-a-days, the masks are stronger as well as the eye protection goggle-like design. Plus you do not have to carry a somewhat large container and/or pack for the purified oxygen with you as you wear the mask.

Pros and Cons of a Gas Mask
The advantages of having a gas mask is that you could set a poisonous gas off towards the enemy more closer than you usually could before it is exposed freely into the air. Then the soldier would simply put on the gas mask and after it the gas is exposed he run through the gas (only if it's a non-liquid gas) and start killing off the enemy as they are either blinded or being affected heavily by/from the gas due to them having the disadvantage. A disadvantage of this is the gas mask either being in the way of warfare and combat, meaning if someone had a broken or cracked eye glass piece, or someone had shot a bullet through the purified oxygen container. If that was to happen, the person who was wearing the gas mask would not be able to breathe the purified air that was keeping them alive from the container which now has a hole in it; and would inhale poisonous and toxic air instead. They, the current victim who was wearing the mask, would not even know they had been exposed to gas before the poisonous gas hits and creeps itself into the container, through the tube, and into the gas mask until the victim starts inhaling it as well as facing the horrible effects of the gas.
