The first gas use during WWI was by the French against the Germans, they used tear-gas grenades. Tear gas was simply used to blind and confuse the enemy. Later, more advanced gases were used to kill or wound the enemy. Gas was used in many small battles, but the first big battle it was used in was the Second Battle of Ypres. Gas was an effective weapon, but it was dependable on weather etc. Gas killed over 1 million people during WWI, some died fast some over time, and all were mourned. In conclusion, gas was used years before WWI but it was used as a weapon first during WW.
